Video Games the epidemic

These violent forms of media portrayal also leads to poor academic performance. In order for the mind to expand and grow one must exercise it in a healthy manner. Tools such as reading, writing, and being read to help the development of a child’s mind. By mere common sense one can deduct that if a child is playing a video game for more hours than they use to study or do homework invariably their academics will suffer. For African-Americans we don’t have any strong positive representation on television. At the least we are portrayed as buffoons or simpletons who are of lower working class and all we seek is material gratification. Although the violence might be detrimental it is also these negative stereotypes that destroy the aspirations of the black youth. In a game like Grand Theft Auto, the main character in the most recent version is black and the object of the game is to glorify gang violence. For the average upper middle class youth minority or white this might not loom as large, but for the poor little black child this game serves as a tutorial on how to live in the environment that surrounds them on a daily basis.
The outcomes of playing video games aren’t all negative there are some effects that some scientists believe to be a good influence. Players have a chance to actively co-create the worlds of games by the decisions they make which could foster maturation in decision making skills. Games can be open-ended and allow for creativity and individualism on certain aspects of life. A video game whether violent or not can allow the player to see that events can happen differently and for a variety of complicated and interconnected reasons. Playing a video game can divert a child’s emotional distress from having a fatherless home or not receiving the attention needed from their parents (this can work negatively or positively depending on the child). In the case of Devin Moore, the love that he was missing at home translated to him committing an unprovoked atrocious crime of murdering three people in once setting. This situation calls on the emotionally detached children that these violent video games can mold.
It is also believed that there is a system in place that strategically phases out young black youth from the education system. To systematically oppress the black race by attacking it’s women and children has been what has helped structure the foundation of the current day American society. Video games are just another tool for the ruling classes to not only make money but to phase the black youth out of society. Almost every other culture has some form of iconography that they can call on when things in that culture get lost in ambiguity because the youth at a young age are taught their history. Since we as people of African descent who have been kidnapped into this imperialistic state of America, we don’t cognitively believe in our history beyond the holocaust of slavery. Consequently when things go wrong with our race too often we look at American media to guide us in the “right” direction. Video games are just another media for us as black people to be locked in the chains of mental slavery through the visual impressions of our youth.
